It’s Go Time! Get Ready to Seed Your Cover Crops

By now, your crops are well on their way—but it’s time to start thinking about what happens after harvest. Fall cover crops aren’t just a good idea—they’re one of the best tools we have to improve soil health, manage moisture, suppress weeds, and keep nutrients where they belong. Don’t like the wet areas from all the rains? Use cover crops to increase water filtration into your soil. Tillage only does that as a one-time Band-Aid. Cover crops make it a lasting impact.

Aerial seeding kicks off at the end of August—just weeks away. If you’re flying cereal rye into standing corn or soybeans, the window is short and weather dependent. Don’t wait until it’s too late, line up your acres, seed and applicator now.

Prefer to drill after harvest? Drilled cover crops like rye, triticale, or oats can go in, starting in late September. That gives you a little more time—but drilling behind the combine moves fast. Make decisions now to ensure you’re not left scrambling when the weather turns or equipment is tied up! Watch the video below to see how our custom drill can seed cover crops for you!

Bonus: Many programs are still offering cost share like the IDALS WQI. $30.00 per acre for first time users, up to 160 acres. Call your local NRCS office today!

Want to get paid for your farming practices during the last year? The Field Data Management program (FDM) from Truterra is available and may be a good fit for your operation! FDM could be the best option if you are already doing no-till and/or cover crops but don't qualify for other programs requiring new practices, or if you are doing tillage but don't qualify for another program. When you enroll, simply submit your 2025 crop information and you can get paid for what you've already done this year - no matter the practice! FDM enrollment opens August 6th and will likely fill up quickly, so don't wait!
